The post is aimed at a Senior Plastic Surgery trainee. These do not carry SAC or college approval for training at present and would therefore suit a post CCT or equivalent individual. The post will be based at the Leicester Royal Infirmary, within the Plastic Surgery service.

This post is a ST6+ level Microsurgical Clinical Fellow within Plastic Surgery.

The role is offered on a 12 month, fixed term contract with a view for extension for the suitable candidate.

Main duties of the job

The micro fellow timetable is quite flexible to accommodate the fellow needs but also the departmental needs. The post holder will be allocated to assist and will gain training in microsurgical reconstruction -3 days of the week. Other days will be given to other duties within the department including trauma or covering absence of colleagues if necessary. As a senior trainee it will be expected that help will be given to junior trainees in oncological reconstructions as well as coordinating trauma and other cases.

The post holder will be expected to be competent in initial management of common Plastic Surgery emergencies including major burns (adult and paediatric) and operative management of basic hand trauma including tendon and nerve repairs.

The successful candidate will be required to know well the patients that are under the care of the subspecialties and helps with the running of the Department. The fellow may be given an opportunity to do some independent operating providing they have discussed this with the appropriate Consultant and providing it is not affecting the safe running of the Department.

The candidate would be responsible for collecting data and presenting yearly free flap audit at the department. Involvement in teaching, research and other audits. During the time in the Department the candidate will be assigned a clinical supervisor/Educational supervisor.

The post-holder will be required to maintain their continuing professional development (CPD) to be able to successfully revalidate. As per the Trust requirement the successful candidate will be required to have annual appraisal and attend / keep fully up to date with statutory and mandatory training as stipulated.
The post-holder will be expected to undertake the Trust Corporate and Directorate specific Induction and competency Programmes appropriate to role.
To be able to provide support when needed for the care of patients with emergency admissions or day attenders during office hours.
To be a point of escalation when the junior doctors requires senior advice.
To provide Plastic Surgery services at the University Hospitals of Leicester.
To provide Plastic Surgery services by way of outpatient clinics and outpatient procedure lists at the University Hospitals of Leicester and in peripheral units.
To work flexibly and cooperatively with the other colleagues to maximise the utilisation of outpatient procedure lists and outpatient clinics.
To ensure the provision of good standards of practice and care as described in the GMC Guidance Duties of a Doctor are followed at all times and that bad practice is reported.
To ensure that clinical practice is both effective and efficient and that appropriate monitoring of clinical care takes place.
To work with the Clinical Management Group (CMG) team to ensure that services are delivered efficiently and reflect best practice with processes and governance to match - this may require new and flexible ways of working in the future.
