The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital is seeking to recruit a Locum Knee Consultant to increase capacity and improve delivery of high-quality surgery to patients referred from General Practitioners,
Triage services and other Secondary or Tertiary care providers. At the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, the Consultant would join the Arthroscopy group within the Large Joints department. The current team comprises 6 colleagues.

The department undertakes a comprehensive range of knee and shoulder surgical procedures. The expectation would be that the post-holder would have a predominant interest in various aspects of Knee (Arthroscopy and Arthroplasty) and a special interest in Total, uni-compartmental and Patello-Femoral Knee Replacement.

The candidate will need to have sufficient experience in osteotomy work around the knee as well as Patello-Femoral soft tissues procedures. It would be highly desirable for candidate to exhibit interest and experience in cartilage regeneration techniques. A flexible approach to working with colleagues and other members of the Multidisciplinary team is expected to ensure maximal efficiency within the department.

The individual appointed to the post will have competed orthopaedic training and have completed or be undertaking a training Fellowship in soft tissue Arthroscopy surgery. Flexible and less than full-time working can easily be accommodated.

Interview date will be confirmed later.

Main duties of the job

The job plan is based upon 10 PA's initially.

It is anticipated that the successful candidate would undertake 2 all day, (2.5 PA) theatre lists per week, with a further 2 out-patient clinics (2 PA). There is a fixed MDT (0.5 PA). The Trust currently offers 1.5 PA for supporting professional activities to cover mandatory training, CPD, preparation for appraisal, attendance at audit etc.

A further 1 SPA is offered in recognition of other SPA activities that support improvement in patient care, service delivery and efficiency, or other activities as specified in the job planning policy. This can be agreed at any time although it is anticipated the candidate would be unlikely to take a lead role within the first 6 months of starting. Alternatively Direct Clinical Care can be increased to 8.5 PA's with 1.5 PA's for core SPA. There is significant scope for flexibility within the Job-planning process. Some flexibility on operating theatres and/or days would be expected but most clinics will be on a fixed day.The post holder will be required to participate in an out of hours on call rota. This is currently a 1 in 13 and attracts Category B intensity.

Consultants within the Trust are expected to complete job plan diaries when required to ensure appropriate remuneration.
